MORE than 500 Tunnock’s teacakes were handed out to people on Buchanan Street to mark Random Act of Kindness Day.

In a bid to encourage walkers to either take part in the Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk, or to support by signing-up to volunteer, volunteers gifted teacakes to 550 Glaswegians in under one hour.

Known as ‘Kilties’, the network of Kiltwalk volunteers ensure the smooth-running of each event, cheering on walkers along the route and providing motivation from start to finish.

The Glasgow Kiltwalk kicks-off the 2018 walks on Sunday April 29.

The walk is set to start at

Glasgow Green, ending 23 miles away in Balloch.

With the 14-mile Big Stroll and the six-mile Wee Wander there is a walk for everyone.

This is followed by Aberdeen on June 3, St Andrews to Dundee on August 19 and Edinburgh on September 16.

Each walk has three distances to choose from to suit walkers of all ages and abilities.

Paul Cooney, chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk, said: “Thank you to Tunnock’s for providing the teacakes and to our Kilties. Our volunteers are a brilliant bunch for coming together to spread cheer in Glasgow to mark Random Acts of Kindness Day.

“We hope this small gesture helps to get people motivated to sign up to walk or volunteer at one of the four Kiltwalks taking place across Scotland this year.

“Whatever your age, whatever your ability we want to see as many people as possible take part this year as either a Kiltie or a Kiltwalker to make the events bigger and better than ever, raising even more money for charity.”

Last year, more than 14,000 Scots took part in the Kiltwalk helping to raise over £2.6 million for over 780 charities across Scotland.

Thanks to the extra 40 per cent from The Hunter Foundation, for every £100 raised by a walker, your chosen charity receives £140.

Royal Bank of Scotland is the headline sponsor of the four events across Scotland.

Arnold Clark is the platinum sponsor and has pledged that

one lucky Kiltwalker from each of the four 2018 events will win a brand new car.

The Hunter Foundation and Sir Tom Hunter underwrite all costs and have pledged that 140 per cent of all fundraising at each of the events will go to charity.

Funds raised at a charitable dinner with President Obama supported the 40 per cent pledge in 2017 and were topped up by The Hunter Foundation.

Johnston Carmichael is a gold sponsor for all four events.

Eden Mill sponsored the inaugural St Andrews to Dundee Kiltwalk.

STV Children’s Appeal is the official grant making partner so those who choose to walk for the Kiltwalk itself will raise money that will be distributed through the STV Children’s Appeal.
