A LICENCE has been applied for by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) to extend the opening hours of its visitor centre at Culloden.
The building, which stands on the site of the 1746 battle between forces loyal to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Duke of Cumberland, is open for longer during the traditional tourist season but now the NTS wants to offer a “year-round” service.
It said the popularity of Outlander was partly behind the move.
The battle features in Diana Gabaldon’s books about a nurse swept back in time to the 18th century.
NTS has applied to Highland Licensing Board for a variation to the visitor centre’s licence. In March, the NTS criticised Highland council for agreeing to build homes close to the battlefield site despite widespread opposition.
Katey Boal, Culloden property manager, said: “Tourism in the Highlands is changing. Our visitors are no longer tied to a traditional season and we are offering a year-round service at our properties in the area.”
