PICKING up on a point from Linda Horsburgh (Letters, The National, September 12), not everyone appears to agree with her regarding the sovereignty of Scotland not being transferred to England.

In the 18th century, the Speaker of the House of Commons stated that England has “catch’d Scotland and we will bind her fast”.

In the 20th century, on page 993 of the Daily Record’s Modern English Illustrated Dictionary (yes that same Daily Record which describes itself on page two as Scotland’s national daily). Under a list of countries and “How acquired by England”.

We find:

Wales by conquest – 1282

Ireland by conquest – 1173

Scotland by union – 1603

In the 21st century, as part of the UK, Scotland is being forced out of the EU with little or no say in the matter despite a large majority vote to remain. It seems the 18th-century Speaker was spot on.
