I FEEL that Liberal MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton has got his knickers in a twist about what in fact is a little bit of free publicity for himself and any other of his ilk (‘Numpty’ LibDem writes to Ofcom over SNP ‘Davey’ ad, The National, January 20). I don’t think the character portrayed in “Davey” bears a resemblance to anyone I have ever read, and if it where the intention to resemble someone known they failed miserably!
Where was the bias and hate? The bile, and the skewered facts? And no mention of remaindered biographies, which may at least have been a clue. Mr Cole-Hamilton is mistaken. “Davy” was not “lampooning”, just giving us the facts.

Am I the only person who watched the SNP party political broadcast and DIDN’T make a connection with the apparently instantly recognisable, world-famous journo David Torrance? I owe this celebrity(?) an apology, as I could probably bump into him in a supermarket and have no idea who he was other than a bloke who turns up on EBC/STV. Any “outrage” over this matter smacks a bit of desperation when you consider the amount of lampooning directed at A Salmond and N Sturgeon. Talk about a storm in a teacup! Mair like a squall in a thimble.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
