I WOULD like to voice my agreement with Gordon MacIntyre-Kemp’s arguments around the economic and social case for a publicly owned Scottish retail bank (Time for Scotland to have a national retail bank? April 19).

As the big banks (some of them owned by the taxpayers) abandon communities there is a growing need for banking to be seen as a vital public service to support local economies.

I would also argue that the creation of a Scottish retail bank that openly planned for the possibility of Scottish independence would fundamentally alter the debate around the economics of independence.

If Scots who support independence then transferred funds to this bank, Scottish independence would become a consumer issue. As we all know: the customer is always right.
