I ALMOST choked on my cornflakes this morning when I read that Colonel Ruth Davidson had been listed by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. It’s clear to almost everyone outside the right-wing press and the Tory party’s increasingly fanatical supporters that Davidson has been promoted well beyond her ability, and her “achievements” are mainly the results of a combination of shameless self-promotional photo opportunities, appearances on TV game shows, sitting on tanks, waving the Union Jack and shouting about how much she opposes another independence referendum. One day, and sooner rather than later, she’ll be found out.

The article in Time says the Tory leader in Scotland “stood out as a proponent of same-sex marriage”. This seems like a complete re-writing of history if you ask me – as far as I remember the vast majority of MSPs including all party leaders voted in favour. In what way did she “stand out”? If Colonel Davidson was such an outstanding and influential figure, then why did more of her MSPs vote against same-sex marriage than voted for it?
