THERE’S a very busy time ahead for the entire Yes DIY movement’s many groups and none more so than Women for Independence (WFI) which is rapidly spreading.
Proof of that will come on Thursday when the latest new group which has been formally started in Dumfries holds a public meeting for all self-identified women in the area to talk about the push for independence
The new group’s meeting is on Thursday 26 April at the Aberdour Hotel, Dumfries, and the discussions and debates will be about how the group can go forward their group and plan their next steps.
The group says: “Dumfries WFI are a new Women for Independence group, looking to gain more members and decide our next steps. If you have ideas about how to involve women in the independence debate, as well as politics generally, come along and share.
“We will be joined by WFI’s National Co-ordinator Margaret Young and National Committee member Kim Nicoll to help shape our group. Please come along and get involved. Children welcome, as is cake!” Now there’s how to build a movement ...
Looking ahead to future events, WFI will play a major role in a huge event across the UK.
On Sunday June 10, thousands of women and girls, those who identify as women and non-binary individuals, will form four epic processions in the four political capitals of the UK – Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London. Given green, white or violet to wear, the colours of the suffrage movement whose initials stood for “Give Women Votes”, they will together create waves of colour as they celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage.
WFI’s own National Committee member Anne McLaughlin is National Co-ordinator for Scotland.
WFI say: “We have been encouraging WFI members and groups to participate. We know some local groups are registering for the event but if you are not marching with a local group and would like to march with other WFI members, we have also registered WFI nationally so that WFI members can march in that group too.
“If you would like to march with the group nationally then please get in touch with Margaret at info@womenforindependence.org This is so we can give the organisers an idea of the numbers that we are bringing.”
Another major event for WFI is their next National which this time will take place in Paisley on June 23. We will give more details nearer the time.
Women for Independence say on their website: “We are delighted to have local MP Mhairi Black join us to speak and we will have our usual mix of speakers, open mics and workshops.
“You do not need to be a WFI member to attend, the meeting is open to all self-identified women.”
