THE ANDREW NEIL INTERVIEWS – THERESA MAY
BBC1, 7pm
THERESA May wouldn’t take part in the leaders’ debate on ITV last week, so we can only assume she is not at her best in a group setting, but will flourish in a one-to-one interview. So tune in tonight to see why our Prime Minister wouldn’t debate. Tune in to see the rich eloquence and wisdom she obviously feared would be drowned out in a panel debate and which she has surely been saving for her interview with Andrew Neil.
Her dodging of the leaders’ debates can only be justified if she is clever, honest and engaging here. It’s quite a challenge when faced with the no-nonsense Neil.
There will be five of these interviews over the coming week. The hapless Paul Nuttall of Ukip is on tomorrow, and it’s Nicola Sturgeon's turn on Thursday.
There are those who grumble that these debates or interviews are repetitive or dull, but it’d be a loss for democracy if our leaders weren’t pinned down in this way.
TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN
SKY ATLANTIC, 2am
EVERYONE has been looking forward to Twin Peaks coming back but as it’s so precious and important, no preview copies were made available. Even a star name like me wasn’t able to obtain one!
The original show baffled and enchanted viewers back in 1990, and I’ll admit I was more baffled than anything else. I was only a young ’un back then, so let that be my excuse. Perhaps this sequel, 25 years later, will be clearer – though its fans might be disappointed if it is.
Kyle MacLachlan returns as the FBI agent dispatched to the weird town all those years ago to investigate the murder of Laura Palmer. Most importantly, the original writers have also returned. It would be sacrilege to have placed this in the hands of anyone else. The first two episodes go out tonight, and are repeated tomorrow at a more civilised hour.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
