THE grounds of an 18th-century Borders home have been transformed into an art exhibition.

Three large-scale, inflatable structures have been placed in the gardens of Mellerstain House, just north of Kelso, by environmental artist Steve Messam.

Titled XXX, the installations are juxtaposed with the historical surroundings of the stately home.

The project has been years in the making and Messam spent a lot of time at the location researching its architecture and history. “You don’t just create things for the sake of creating things,” he said.

“They have to have meaning, have depth and say something about the site. So you’ve got to understand the site first.”

The exhibition runs every weekend until September 11, with a ticket-only event on September 9 when the installations will be illuminated underneath a full moon.
