Hogmanay (BBC One, from 9.50pm, STV from 10.15pm)

THE night kicks off with a 10-minute preview of the delights to come, presented by Jackie Bird. Comedian Iain Stirling takes over at 10pm with a history of nights out from the 1950s to the present. At 11pm, it’s Only an Excuse, with Jonathan Watson and guests. From 11.30pm the countdown to the bells is on in Hogmanay Live with KT Tunstall, the Scott Wood Band and Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain, while Roddy Hart presents highlights of the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, featuring Rag’n’Bone Man and the traditional firework display. On STV, the countdown begins with the News Year in Review (10.15pm) followed by The People’s History Show: 60 Years of STV from 10.30pm. Ewen Cameron trawls the archives to find out-takes and bloopers from 11pm, and Jack McLaughlin returns with Thingummyjig Hogmanay Ceilidh from 11.30pm.

Jools’ Annual Hootenanny (BBC Two, 11.20pm)

The headliner of the 25th annual New Year party is Ed Sheeran, who performs with the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Other acts taking to the stage include Mavis Staples, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Jessie Ware, Soul II Soul, Beth Ditto, the Beat starring Dave Wakelin, George McCrae, Jose Feliciano, Ruby Turner and the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards.
