GLASGOW Film Festival has announced the films which will open and end their fourteenth year. Kicking off the GFF on February 21 will be the UK premiere of Wes Anderson’s Isle Of Dogs, an animated adventure telling the story of 12-year-old Atari Kobayashi and his pack of mongrel friends. Featuring an all-star voice cast including Bryan Cranston, Frances McDormand and Yoko Ono, Isle Of Dogs’ trailer can be watched through this link: bit.ly/IsleofDogsGFF

Closing the festival on March 4 will be the eagerly awaited Scottish documentary Nae Pasaran, Felipe Bustos Sierra’s feature film charting the story of the group of workers at the Rolls Royce factory in East Kilbride who managed to ground half of Chile’s air force by refusing to carry out the vital repairs of engines for Hawker Hunter planes, which had been used during the brutal military coup in September 1973. The boycott, which endured for four years, was the longest single act of solidarity with the people of Chile against Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship and Bustos Sierra – himself the Scotland-based son of a Chilean exile – reunites workers from the period and survivors of the regime. The director says he’s “delighted” Nae Pasaran will have its premiere in Glasgow as the city is “birthplace of our protagonists and one of the most active cities for Chilean Solidarity in its day.

Tickets for Nae Pasaran will be available from noon on Monday, January 22 from glasgowfilm.org/festival and includes entry to the GFF closing party after the screening.

The full GFF programme will be announced on Wednesday, January 24 with tickets on sale to GFF members and GFT CineCard holders from noon the following day and then on general sale from Monday, January 29. To take advantage of the four days of advance booking and discounts offered, GFF membership is available now for £10 via www.glasgowfilm.org/gffmembership

Other events already confirmed include a focus on new Irish cinema, Scottish Album of the Year Award-winners Sacred Paws performing a live soundtrack to Margaret Salmon’s full-throttle speedway documentary Mm and a Gregory’s Girl v Clueless school disco. See next Saturday’s National for a full preview of what’s on offer at the GFF, which will run in various venues across the city from February 21 to March 4.
