Great Rail Restorations with Peter Snow, Channel 4, 8pm
NEW series. Peter Snow and Henry Cole visit projects across the country where teams of restoration experts are attempting to restore historic railway carriages. The first stop is Vale of Llangollen in North Wales, to visit a 1912 carriage designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the creator of the Flying Scotsman, where Cole explores how the emergency cord was invented.
Grenfell: The First 24 Hours, STV, 9pm
IN the early hours of June 14, 2017, a blaze broke out at Grenfell Tower in west London, claiming 72 lives and injuring many others. ITV is marking the appalling tragedy’s first anniversary with this moving documentary in which survivors recall the events of that terrible night. The programme charts what happened, from the first report of the fire to the London Fire Brigade getting it under control 24 hours later. Among those featured are a firefighter who rescued nine people that night.
The Reality TV Story, Channel 5, 10pm
THE new series of Love Island began this week and there will be another run of Big Brother along later this year, but how did reality TV come to dominate the schedules and the headlines? This lengthy documentary traces the genre’s roots back to the 1970s and looks at how it has changed not just TV but also our concept of celebrity.
The Richard Dimbleby Lecture, BBC 1, 10.45pm
AWARD-winning writer and acclaimed author of the semi-autobiographical novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson delivers this year’s annual lecture. One hundred years on from the first women in the UK securing the right to vote, Winterson asks what we can learn from the suffragette movement of a century ago, and examines the potential of global campaigns promoting the equality of women.

We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
