Searching for Shergar, BBC2, 8pm

THE kidnapping of Shergar remains one of sport’s great unsolved mysteries. The racehorse was born in Kildare in 1978 and went on to win the Irish Derby as well as the Derby. Its owner, the Aga Khan, decided to retire it for stud and the horse returned to Ireland in a blaze of publicity. But there were to be even more headlines when Shergar was kidnapped by an armed gang in 1983. Little evidence was found at the scene and no-one has ever been convicted or admitted responsibility for the crime. Now, 35 years on, director Alison Millar is on a mission to find out what happened to the stallion. She also reminds viewers why, even before becoming the centre of a whodunit, Shergar was a truly remarkable horse.
