A BREXIT conference has been called for women in Scotland to come together to find out how the decision to leave the European Union will affect their jobs, families and communities.

The event, titled “The Implications of Brexit for Women in Scotland” will be held on Saturday, January 28 in Glasgow and speakers include Scottish Government Brexit minister Mike Russell MSP, Angela Crawley MP, member of Westminster’s Women and Equalities Committee and GMB European officer Kathleen Walker Shaw.

The conference, organised by the Scottish Women’s Convention (SWC), will address key issues including what Brexit means for women in Scotland in relation to jobs, families and communities, and what the real concerns are for women in this historic transition.

Women from throughout Scotland will gather to listen to speakers and contribute to the discussion around Brexit. Dialogue recently has tended to focus on the big debate around Brexit – whether it will be “hard” or “soft”, what this will mean for industry in the UK, which politician has the most support in the way forward and court cases on procedures.

Agnes Tolmie, SWC chair, said: “People with power are making decisions which impact on society without consulting with those who will bear the brunt. Women, who are the cornerstone of communities throughout the country, need to be heard.

“There are urban and rural issues which may require different support. Poverty and health may be impacted by the cuts to funding and research. Vital local services may be withdrawn due to lack of European Funding which has been relied upon for years. Where are women going to get the support they need in the coming years?”

She said all women are welcome to come along to hear the speakers and raise their concerns at the event in the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel in Byres Road, Glasgow, from 10am until 1.30pm.
