THE SNP have a “tunnel vision” when it comes to independence, the Prime Minister said as she rallied the 600 troops down the front of the 1,200 seater SECC. All they can think about is the constitution, she continued, in a speech which mentioned the word union 29 times.
Independence, she went on, was an “obsession” of the SNP.
Still though, it must have been nice for the Prime Minister to take a wee break from Brexit and spend some time accusing others of being single minded nationalists, obsessed with the constitution at the expense of the day job.
The delegates jumped to their feet managing to somehow give a standing ovation that was both enthusiastic and tepid.
Next up was Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Dean Lockhart. He told the few Tory delegates who hadn’t managed to escape in time that the SNP only cared about independence.
Then MSP and occasional FMQs comedy turn Maurice Golden told the conference the SNP were more concerned with independence than they were with the day job.
While Jamie Greene warned it would be independence, not Brexit that would be the nail in the coffin for the Scotland’s economy.
North East MSP Peter Chapman said Scots needed to vote Tory in the council elections to stop another independence referendum.
The SNP are the ugly sisters with prince charming as independence, and the Scottish Tories as Cinderella, I think was what MSP Rachel Hamilton was saying.
Murdo Fraser, meanwhile, told Nicola Sturgeon to stop banging on about a second referendum.
Then there was a break for lunch before a Q&A with some of the new Tory MSP, so that delegates could hear what they thought about independence.
That was followed by a debate on Scottish independence.
The Tories are obsessed.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
