CAMERAS will begin rolling on the next instalments of Marvel superhero franchise Avengers in Edinburgh today, as an enormous green screen was set up in Edinburgh Waverley station.

The big budget action movie production will be the biggest ever to take place in Scotland, and is expected to bring £10 million to the economy.

Yesterday crews were putting the finishing touches to sets in city centre locations, with the Miss Katie Cupcake shop on Cockburn Street transformed into a takeaway bearing posters promising: “We will deep fry your kebab.”

Meanwhile, a 40ft green screen, used for adding special effects, was erected in Waverley station, with a large section of the concourse next to platform two cordoned off.

Crews also installed a coffee kiosk, bike racks, benches and other props, and while station owner Network Rail refused to confirm which production will be made there or how long the process will take, it is understood that it will feature in the blockbuster.

Reports suggest the station set could be in use for several weeks as the crews make two sequels for the superhero series.

Robert Downey Jr will reprise his role as Iron Man, with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Chris Evans as Captain America in Avengers: Infinity War, and an as yet untitled second film. Inverness actress Karen Gillan is also expected to be amongst the cast after telling social media she was set to “get back into blue” to play intergalactic villain Nebula, last seen by audiences in comic book adaptation Guardians of the Galaxy.

Much of the work for the Marvel movies will be completed in America where work began last year, while drones will be used to shoot aerial footage of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

The Royal Mile will be closed to pedestrians between Roxburgh’s Close and Old Fishmarket Close for several days, beginning on March 30, with more work to follow.

Locals have been warned to expect “small explosions” on two days next month and further shoots will take place in the Highlands and Glasgow, with Wardpark Studios in Cumbernauld also used. Fans will be able to see the results in May 2018, when the first of the two films is released.
