CALIFORNIA’S National Party chair has told of his inspiration at seeing Nicola Sturgeon and Governor Jerry Brown sign a bilateral agreement on climate change during her visit to the Golden State.

Theo Slater said the First Minister was a “fantastic cultural representative” for Scotland and he hoped to be able to work together on best practices for mitigating climate change.

“The cost of climate change could be huge, but determined nations like California and Scotland can lower those costs with smart development and some targeted infrastructure projects,” said Slater. “Nations such as Scotland, California, and other countries with experience on large projects that can protect our communities from the devastating impacts of climate change through mitigation must all work together.

“These large infrastructure opportunities will create countless well-paying union jobs. Such infrastructure relationships could also expand into larger and broader economic connections between our respective nations.

“Scotland and California are both places where the future is invented.”

Slater said the CNP had watched with interest the SNP’s spring conference and supported its call for self-determination under a new indyref.

He added: “It is also vital that we, as progressive nations, work together to combat the darkening cloud of xenophobia and racism that loom on the horizon.

“Only authentic voices of reason and tolerance such as those from the Scottish National Party and CNP can combat the rhetoric of the far right parties advancing across the globe.

“The CNP is continually inspired by the Scottish example that Scotland is a nation that insists on self-determination and global recognition.”
