AN exhibition celebrating Dundee’s maritime heritage and history as a vital Scottish sea port went on permanent display yesterday.

The Maritime Quarter is hosted at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum as part of the site’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Bespoke casing houses 30 models from the city’s collection, with the display inspired by the purchase of eight DP&L Shipping Company models in 2015.

From at least the 16th century, Dundee had its own Maritime Quarter, home to shipmasters as well as different trades that provided for the ships. In the 19th and early 20th century ship building became a key industry in the city.

The National:

Maritime historian Dr Andrew Jeffrey said: “This will celebrate the shipyard workers who built the ships, and it will honour the hardy crews who sailed them to every corner of the globe.”
