A CONCERT starring tenor Russell Watson was cancelled on Saturday night after a fire broke out at one of Glasgow’s biggest entertainment venues.

The self-styled “People’s Voice” was among those evacuated from the SEC Armadillo.

He tweeted: “There has been a fire at the Glasgow SEC!!! We have been evacuated ... OMG smoke bellowing (sic) from the back of the venue.”

Fire engines attended the scene after the alarm was raised just before 6pm.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 5.58pm on Saturday the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a building on fire in Exhibition Way.

“A total of four fire appliances including an aerial appliance were mobilised to the scene.

“Firefighters wearing protective breathing apparatus tackled the flames externally with the aid of powerful hoses.”

No-one was hurt and the fire was brought under control, with crews remaining at the scene “to check for hotspots and to ensure the ventilation of the building”.

The SEC confirmed the concert had been cancelled and said more information would follow.

Watson later posted a selfie taken with one of the firefighters, adding in a tweet: “Well done to u and your team for dousing the flames at the SECC today! We all appreciate the job the fire service does.”

An updated statement on his Facebook page confirmed the concert had been cancelled, adding that ticket holders would be contacted by the venue.

“The important thing is that everyone has been evacuated and is safe,” said the statement.

Last night's Bob Dylan gig at the venue went ahead as planned.
