IT took discipline, agility and “a big bath” for MSP Emma Harper's Maya to become the first ever Holyrood Dog of the Year.

Yesterday the border collie celebrated with a biscuit after rounding up the competition outside the Scottish Parliament.

As many as 14 cross-party canines took part in what the Kennel Club and Dogs Trust is calling “arguably the most sought-after new title in politics”.

They included third-placed terrier-cross Cinder, owned by the SNP’s Richard Lochhead, and runner-up bulldog Astra, a Dogs Trust pup competing with Tory Bill Bowman.

Pets belonging to Mark Ruskell and Andy Wightman of the Greens and Labour’s Claudia Beamish were also amongst those vetted by the judges.

However, the mutt-ley crew of competitors was left feeling ruff – because four-year-old Maya had the title licked.

Her owner Emma Harper, an SNP MSP, has campaigned to end illegal puppy trafficking affecting her South Scotland region. She said: “I am absolutely delighted to have won the first ever Holyrood Dog of the Year and so is Maya.

“Maya has definitely earned herself a biscuit after her performance. We prepared for today’s event by giving Maya lots of exercise and a big bath.”

Already eyeing a second title, she went on: “I have three dogs and all of them have been adopted from rescue centres. I would encourage anyone hoping to get a dog to adopt a rescue dog as they are vet checked, microchipped and desperately in need of a loving home.

“I might have another rescue dog next year, and we’d be very eager to take part in the next Holyrood Dog of the Year.”

Adrian Burder, chief executive officer of Dogs Trust, said he was “thrilled” by the turnout.

Meanwhile, Bill Lambert from the Kennel Club said the “undeniable” bond between Harper and Maya had impressed the judges, adding: “We wish Maya all the best for the year ahead, reigning as Scotland’s top dog.”
