HUNDREDS of office workers, school children, parents, councillors, pensioners, students and police officers were among those who attended a vigil in Glasgow’s George Square to remember those killed and injured in the Manchester Arena terror attacks.

The memorial service was led by the city’s new Lord Provost, Evan Bolander, and floral tributes and candles were laid at the foot of the Scott Monument in the centre of the square.

She said: “This was the height of cowardice and truly evil. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Manchester to show strength, love and deep sympathy for all people affected.”

Despite being arranged at short notice, with grey skies overhead, around 250 people turned up to pay their respects to those who have suffered at the hands of yet another terrorist attack.

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said in a short speech: “It seems that too often we gather in George Square in memory and in condolence when there has been an act of terror in the world and innocent lives taken.

“This one was very close to home in a city we have a great deal in common with. Many of us will have visited and enjoyed it – just like those young boys and girls, who were attending what will have been their first pop concert. Too many of them will not be going home.

“It’s a devastating attack of terror and all we can do is send out love, our sympathy and our condolences and say that we stand in solidarity.”

Among the emotional crowd united in grief and shock was Joanne Toward and her daughters Carly, 10, and Kayla, six. She held back tears as she said: “It’s heartbreaking. Carly is at the age where she wants to go to concerts and things, it’s just too sad. We just want to pay our respects in some way.”

Thomas Kerr attended the vigil because he wanted to pay his respects and said: “I was in tears this morning when I found out that one little girl was eight – my little sister is just seven and that really hit home. It’s absolutely shocking and I just want to show my respect and stand in solidarity.”
