A SONG branding Theresa May a 'liar liar' ahead of the election campaign has hit the top of the charts - but radio stations won't play it on air.

'Liar Liar GE2017', by London-based Captain SKA, is sitting in second place in Apple's iTunes chart and tops Amazon's listing of songs downloaded in Britain.

The song has gained popularity by being shared online, gaining fast popularity despite not being given airtime by chart shows.

Broadcasters have strict limitations placed on them during election periods that limits what they can do and say on air.

In response to this a petition has been launched on change.org calling for radio stations, such as Heart FM and Capital FM, to play the song on air during the chart shows where, at the moment, the song is being acknowledged before it is skipped over for the next track.

This is not unlike the period after Margaret Thatcher died  when the Wizard of Oz's classic 'Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead' climbed to second place in the charts. At the time stations, including the BBC, played short clips from the song rather than the entirity of it.

A spokesperson from the Conservative party has said they have no comment on the song.
