DEACON Blue singer Ricky Ross went that extra mile to help some of the poorest people in the world by taking part in Scotland’s leading international aid charity’s first 5k family fun run.

Earlier this year, the man behind hits such as Dignity and Real Gone Kid, was invited to Zambia by the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) to see how money raised in Scotland is training farmers to make the most of their land.

The National:

“I’m delighted to have taken part in the run and I know the money raised will make a big difference to the lives of some of the poorest people in the world.”

He came home to throw his weight behind the charity’s annual Wee Box campaign, focusing on poor farming communities in Africa.

The singer joined more than a hundred SCIAF supporters for a fun run around Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, at the weekend to help raise thousands of pounds to support families affected by poverty, hunger, war and natural disasters.

Ross said: “SCIAF is a fantastic charity doing great work. In January, I saw for myself how even small donations made in Scotland are transforming the lives of poor farmers in Zambia.

Teresa McGoldrick, event organiser at SCIAF, said: “It was really great to see Ricky and so many people taking part.”
