SCOTTISH businessman and philanthropist Tom Hunter has backed an entrepreneurial charity initiative organised by St Andrew’s Hospice as part of its £9 million capital appeal.

Unique fundraising challenge “You’re Hired” encourages businesses to set entrepreneurial tasks for their staff, particularly graduates and apprentices, as part of their self-development training, and at the same time benefit the hospice.

Each team will be invited to present their project to a team of judges in “The Boardroom” and the winning team will have the opportunity to be mentored for a day by Tom Hunter.

Commenting on the challenge, Hunter said: “This is a fabulous initiative to encourage many, many people and organisations to support this fantastic appeal — I’d encourage everyone to get behind this.”

Local businesses who have signed up to take part include North Lanarkshire Council, Starfish, Morgan Sindall and Tesco whose teams are planning a variety of events including race nights, gala days and football tournaments.

Karen McFadyen, capital appeal director, said: “Corporate social responsibility is a core discipline for businesses these days. This challenge provides a fun environment for teams to enhance their business skills and at the same time give something back to the community.”

The hospice recently celebrated reaching the £5m fundraising milestone for the capital appeal, which is set to fund a substantial upgrade of the existing hospice building in Airdrie.
