THE news today that Scotland's economy has grown four times faster than the UK's was welcomed by many - and left others looking a little red-faced.

Ahead of the release of the new GDP figures that show Scotland's economy grew between January and March by 0.8%, compared to the previous three months, the Scottish Conservatives had been pressing that Scotland could be facing another recession, and specifically, that this was the result of the SNP.

Now that the figures have revealed Scotland's economic performance has outstripped the rest of the UK it could be hard for the Tories to walk back their claim that the SNP are solely responsible for it.

So here are three occasions where the Conservatives jumped the gun and accidentally congratulated the SNP.

1. On their press release the day before the GDP figures

Ahead of the official GDP announcement the Conservatives published a press release stating that Scotland was "potentially 24 hours away from recession."

In the release Dean Lockhart, Scottish Tory Economy Spokesperson, stated that Scotland's current financial situation was "all on the SNP’s shoulders."

2. Ruth Davidson on Facebook

Yesterday Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Conservatives and outspoken fan of Gillian Anderson, took to Facebook to also promote the narrative that the SNP had led Scotland to a recession.

On her post she proclaimed that "the nationalists have no-one to blame but themselves."

Awkward.

3. Dean Lockhart in The i

Dean Lockhart also spoke to the i and stated that the SNP "can’t possibly blame Brexit" for Scotland's economy and must take responsibility for the figures- a fact he must now regret as the UK's overall economy lags behind in the face of Brexit.
