NEW Zealand’s Danny Lee will have the unusual experience of defending a title he won two years ago in this week’s Greenbrier Classic.
Lee claimed his first PGA Tour title at The Old White TPC in 2015, beating David Hearn, Kevin Kisner and Robert Streb in a play-off after the quartet had finished tied on 13 under par. But the 26-year-old was denied the chance to repeat the feat 12 months later when the tournament was cancelled due to devastating flooding throughout West Virginia.
More than 20 people were killed and hundreds more rescued across the state after days of heavy rain led to flooding in several areas, with the course suffering extensive damage.
“It would [have] felt a lot better if it was last year, but the unfortunate weather happened here and people had to go through some tough stuff here,” Lee told a pre-tournament press conference. “It does feel like I’m going to defend and last year was obviously a very special moment. It was my first PGA Tour victory and I really felt like I needed that to make something different to myself and to make it into the Presidents Cup.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
