Two time champion Rafael Nadal has swept into the third round at Wimbledon for only the second time in six years, but he claims he is not looking beyond that.

After winning his 10th French Open title last month the Spaniard has looked as impressive as he has for many years, but he dismissed comparison with his peak years at Wimbledon.

“In 2010, 2008, I was playing finals in a row here,” he noted.

“2008 was the third in a row and in 2010 was the fourth in a row because I didn't play here in 2009. “That was a different story, but at the same time you never know.

“We are just beginning of tournament. I won two rounds. Happy for that, but doesn't make sense to think about how deep I can go in the draw or not. I’m really not thinking about that now.”

Nadal could reclaim the world number one spot if he wins the tournament, but he believes he has all the more reason to be wary because of a combination of the surface and the quality of the opponent he is meeting in the next round.

“For the moment I’m in the third round,” he said.

“You never know. Grass is a different surface and things change quickly.

“I feel like I’m playing well now, but I have a high quality opponent now in Karen Khachanov, so I’m not thinking about how far I can go, I’m just happy to win another match at Wimbledon. That means a lot to me.”

The 21-year-old Russian has been tipped to join the sport’s elite and Nadal clearly recognises the potential threat.

“He's a great player in all aspects… good serve, good forehand, good backhand, a lot of power. He's very strong, as all the young players are and he’s a good worker.”

He expressed satisfaction with the way he is playing, however, following his win over American Donald Young in which the only minor blip was his failure to hold serve when he had his first opportunity to serve out the match.

“It was a good match again, almost all the time more or less under control,” said Nadal.

“I had an inconvenience with losing my serve when I was serving for the match. That's the only moment. Apart from that I think I played a solid match. I’m serving well. In general terms, I am happy. I played well.”
