HARDCORE nationalist protesters the Scottish Resistance faced off with Unionist counterparts yesterday outside the Tunnock’s teacake factory in Uddingston.

Around a dozen Scottish nationalists gathered outside the plant to protest against the company’s decision to add a Union Jack to its packaging as part of an export rebrand.

The protesters were confronted by a smaller group of British nationalist supporters, who taunted the Yes movement members.

Political activist Sean Clerkin was among the protesters. He explained the rationale behind the campaign.

“Essentially,” he said, “what’s happening is companies are promoting Britishness over their Scottish heritage – and we’re here to highlight that.”

He added: “We still support Tunnock’s as a company, but will continue to boycott them until they overturn their decision to add a Union Jack to their export logo.

“They claim it’s a business decision, designed to appeal to Japanese markets who have little conception of Scotland.

“But considering the popularity of Scottish whisky, for instance, in Japan, we find that hard to believe.”

Despite tempers flaring, the protest remained peaceful.
