PARTICK Thistle midfielder Adam Barton is inspired by the prospect of taking down Celtic’s “Invincibles”.

The treble-winners made it 50 domestic games unbeaten when an under-strength team thrashed Kilmarnock 5-0 in the Betfred Cup on Tuesday night.

Celtic have won 46 of those matches and are showing no signs of letting up with nine goals in two games this season.

But Barton has revealed he and his team-mates are determined to become the team to stop their run when they clash in the Premiership at Firhill this evening.

“It’s our turn to try and take this invincibles title off them,” the Irishman said. “I think it gives us that extra lift.

“Yes, we are playing for three points but are also playing to go down in history – to stop the invincibles. That definitely plays its part.

“We have said to each other, it’s our time, it’s our turn to try and do this. That’s the biggest thing for me, we can upset them and go down in history for doing this. It would be all over the papers.

“Taking that off them would be incredible and that gives us that extra yard, to go and show they are not the team they are and we are the team we want to be as well.”

Thistle were one of four teams to take points off Brendan Rodgers’ side last season but were on the end of a 5-0 thrashing at Firhill in the penultimate game of the campaign.

Barton added: “They have probably done that to every team in the league and we were the next team to get it.

“That’s the thing, if you can spend that type of money and other teams can’t, what do people expect? It is unfair but it is what it is and you have got to get on with it.

“I had never played against a team who basically expected to go out and win every single game by four or five.”

However, Barton feels there is plenty his side can do to give themselves a chance.

“A lot of it comes down to individual errors,” the 26-year-old said. “Their movement on the ball is incredible and that is down to the manager. but it is 11 men against 11 men. A couple of seconds not concentrating and a team like Celtic will score, while another team in the league would need a few chances. You have to be focused and make sure you are doing your job.

“We have worked on it and I said it a few times last season, anyone who comes off the bench knows their job.

“You can prepare as much as you want but we are up against a really strong side so you have just got to have everyone on their game and give them a hard time.”

Eboue Kouassi will sit out the Firhill clash but Celtic are confident his knee injury is not as bad as was first feared.

The Ivorian had to be carried off during his side’s five-goal romp over Kilmarnock but while he has yet to undergo a scan, the Parkhead medical team are hopeful he is not facing a long-term lay-off.

Skipper Scott Brown is back from suspension for the trip while a host of first-team stars are set to return after Rodgers made eight changes for the Betfred Cup triumph. However, defenders Erik Sviatchenko and Dedryck Boyata (both knee) and striker Moussa Dembele (hamstring) remain out.
