NICOLA Sturgeon has branded the UK Government's "have cake and eat it" stance on a customs union as "daft".

David Davis set out plans for a post-Brexit customs deal that would set up a temporary customs union allowing Britain to continue trading freely with Europe while setting up other international trade deals.

However the First Minister stated that the UK should instead be committing to staying in the single market and customs union.

The document which outlines cutsoms union plans is the first in a series of papers that will be published by the UK government as Brexit progresses.

The paper outlines how, once the temporary customs union came to an end, the UK would be in a position to then choose how it would treat it's border with the EU.

This plan will almost certainly be rejected by Brussels.

Sturgeon was not the first to dismiss Davis' plan today.  Labour MP Chris Leslie also called the Tory proposals a “fantasy”.

“It looks like the new unified position in the Cabinet is to return the Government to the territory of wanting to have their cake and eat it,” Leslie said.

“Ministers claim we can leave the Customs Union and yet still achieve ‘the most frictionless customs agreement anywhere in the world’ but with absolutely no detail about how such a miraculous system will be achieved.
