SCOTS will show their support for Catalonian independence by flying out to Barcelona for the referendum.

With return flights to the city from Glasgow currently priced at £120 return, independence supporters are snapping up the chance to visit the historic city as well as experience some of the buzz of the October 1 referendum.

Some are even hoping to find out how to capture some of the Catalonian enthusiasm for independence to bring it back to Scotland.

A group from Angus is just one of the parties booked to fly out for the big day.

“I think it will be something else,” said Ron Buchanan, from Forfar. “We were talking about it in the pub and it seemed a good idea to go there for the referendum.

“A lot of Catalonian folk have been very supportive of Scotland’s fight for independence and it would be nice to reciprocate.

“Hopefully they will vote Yes. I think that would boost Scotland’s chances in a way, although that could depend on the fall-out afterwards between Spain and Catalonia.

“I think it is great that other folk want to take control of their own destiny and I think there will be a great buzz there.”

Buchanan added: “I think there might be quite a few folk going. I remember the incredible buzz here the night before the referendum – which unfortunately was followed by a big downer.

“But in Catalonia the polls are currently showing 62 per cent in favour so I am hopeful it will be a Yes.”

Buchanan’s wife, Julz, who is also going on the trip, said she wanted to show solidarity with Catalonians who support Scottish independence.

“I also want to speak to people and maybe get an understanding of how they are able to spread their enthusiasm for independence,” she said. “It seems they are a little bit more enthusiastic about their independence campaign than people are here, so I will be looking for ideas.

“It will be interesting to find out why that is – maybe they don’t have the cringe factor.”
