THE DEUCE, SKY ATLANTIC, 10pm

THIS new series is from David Simon, the writer of The Wire, and it has already taken the US by storm, with some critics saying it’s the equal of his famous Baltimore drug drama.

Instead of the world of drugs, this new drama enters the world of prostitution and porn in grubby 1970s New York.

Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as Candy, a prostitute who’s determined not to be used, abused and insulted. She refuses to use a pimp, and this desire to work independently means she might earn more, but she’s physically vulnerable. James Franco plays two twin brothers, one a barman and the other a desperate gambler.

Besides street work we see the growth of the porn industry – will this equal freedom and money for the girls, or just another form of exploitation?

DOCTOR FOSTER, BBC1, 9pm

THIS is an absolute cracker of an episode!

Kate begins to doubt whether she can trust Simon. He keeps kissing her, always hugging and smirking, assuring her that Gemma is gone and they can both finally relax, but she is beginning to feel rather paranoid and uncomfortable. Has Gemma really gone? Can she totally trust Simon? And what was in that little gift Gemma gave her in the first episode?

Kate just can’t relax, and even poses as a potential buyer so she can visit Gemma’s house with an estate agent and snoop through her drawers – which are still packed with all her personal things.

Kate’s character has been quite milky until now, but tonight she finally develops some guts.

And Gemma rings Simon to say: “I want to give you the opportunity to make the right decision.” Otherwise, she will “destroy” him. He laughs and refuses – and so Gemma implements her devilish plan.
