Former First Minister Alex Salmond had the perfect response to a joke by Secretary of State for Scotland David Mundell at Tory conference yesterday.

After Mundell said in his speech that Nicola Sturgeon must wish she could bin Salmond’s “Benny Hill” routine like the Tory panda joke, Salmond hit back on Twitter.

Salmond said while he’d only sold out 19 Edinburgh Fringe shows, Mundell had sold out the whole of Scotland.

He tweeted: “How can I compete with "Fluffy" @DavidMundellDCT for humour? I only sold out 19 festival shows, he sold out the entire country.”

Earlier, Salmond said Mundell was “not fit to be an MP” after his “mealy-mouthed” criticism of Spain’s violent treatment of Catalan voters.

During an interview with the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland, the top Tory was asked to comment on the situation in Catalonia. “Ultimately this is a matter that will have to resolved within Spain,” he replied.

“It will be a matter that will have to resolved by the Spanish Government, by Catalonians, by other interests across Spain.”

He added: “I obviously condemn violence wherever I see it, and those pictures were not edifying."

Former First Minister Alex Salmond tweeted: “‘Not edifying’, mealy-mouthed Mundell's description of state violence against Catalan people. Not fit to be an MP, my description of Mundell.”
