SCOTTISH Labour faces a new contest for deputy leader should Alex Rowley not return to the post once an investigation into allegations made against him by a former partner have been completed.

The Fife MSP, who was elected deputy leader in 2015, has refuted claims against him and has vowed to clear his name. However, should he not return the party will have to launch another internal contest – possibly weeks after a new leader is installed.

Voting closes at midday today in the leadership election between Central Scotland MSP Richard Leonard and Glasgow MSP Anas Sarwar, with the winner being announced tomorrow.

Any contest for deputy would see a female-only list of candidates after the party was criticised for the absence of any female contenders for leader.

During the leadership campaign Sarwar said if he won he would want a female deputy leader to ensure a more gender-balanced leadership team. Leonard also made pledges on wider gender-balance issues in the party. Sarwar backers Pauline McNeill and Jackie Baillie, and Central Scotland MSP Monica Lennon, who supports Leonard, are among the likely candidates.

Reports have suggested Midlothian MP Danielle Rowley, Rowley’s daughter, may be interested in standing. She is campaign chief for Leonard.
