REFERRING to yesterday’s article “Loneliness hits young people due to social media use” (The National, January 4), I am not surprised.

At the end of the day, young people themselves will control the power-of-nature-deficit disorder exacerbated by technology.

What we adults need to do is help them to gain a sense of proportion. Only by demonstrating the attraction of experiencing the natural environment and by supporting the security of youth clubs will the grip of gizmos be loosened. Then the benefits of face-to-face friendships will outweigh fixation with social media.

For that reason, I would urge the Scottish Government to invest heavily in the provision of basic core funding for youth clubs everywhere.

Even at a mercenary level, research has now shown that for every £1 spent on youth work, society gains £7.

Well done young people – I love you all!
