River Monsters, STV, 8pm
ON a volcanic island in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an ancient fishing community is being terrorised by something in the water that has left behind a trail of bloodied victims. With a collective knowledge built up over centuries, these fishermen thought they knew everything in these waters – until now. The only clue they have to the attacker’s identity are the large puncture wounds it has left behind. Here, angling detective Jeremy Wade journeys to this land of fire and folklore to put himself to the ultimate test.
The Big Soap Quiz: Coronation Street v Emmerdale, STV, 9pm
IN the soap ratings war, ITV’s old favourites Coronation Street and Emmerdale have long been happy bedfellows. However, when it comes to contests, team members from the Dales and Weatherfield rarely take prisoners (unlike Pat Phelan). Here, Mark Charnock, better known as Emmerdale’s lovably eccentric Marlon Dingle, and Jack P Shepherd, aka Corrie’s bad boy David Platt, return to settle a score and lead their teams. Overseeing the latest round of soap-related head scratchers is Stephen Mulhern.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
