NICOLA Sturgeon yesterday accused Jeremy Corbyn of misleading the public after the Labour leader claimed being part of the single market was “dependent on membership of the EU”.
Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein are all in the single market but not in the EU.
Responding to the SNP leader’s calls for Labour to back a bid to keep the UK in the single market, Corbyn said: “I don’t quite understand why she would keep saying ‘join the single market’ when leaving the EU means you leave the single market.”
A bemused Sturgeon tweeted: “Saying this once could be a simple mistake. Continuing to say it when you know it is inaccurate can only be an attempt to mislead people.”
There is support from the SNP, Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru, the Greens and some Labour MPs for an amendment to the Withdrawal Bill going through Parliament this week to stop ministers taking the UK out of the single market and customs union without the approval of Parliament. Labour’s leadership have said they won’t support it.
Asked if Labour would support a second EU referendum, the Labour leader would only say his party was not calling for one.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
