NICOLA Sturgeon has slammed the UK Government's Brexit transition agreement as a "massive sellout of the Scottish fishing industry".

As part of Brexit negotiations earlier the UK capitulated on demands over fishing quotas. During the transition period it is now expected that powers over fishing quotas will remain with the EU.

David Davis said this arrangement would apply only to 2019 and promised that the UK's share of the total catch cannot be changed.

However Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, said the agreement fell "far short of an acceptable deal".

"We will leave the EU and leave the Common Fisheries Policy, but hand back sovereignty over our seas a few seconds later," he said. "Our fishing communities' fortunes will still be subject to the whim and largesse of the EU for another two years."

The First Minister tweeted her frustration at the Tories backing down on the promises made during the EU referendum to Scotland's fisheries.

She tweeted: "This is shaping up to be a massive sellout of the Scottish fishing industry by the Tories. The promises that were made to them during #EUref and since are already being broken - as many of us warned they would be."
