A MEMORIAL has been unveiled at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to one of its most famous pupils.

Legendary Cream bass guitarist Jack Bruce was a cello and composition student at what was then the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama from 1958 to 1961.

Now the Glasgow-born star, who died in 2014, has been remembered with a sculpture, made of wood, Perspex and metal, which encapsulates some of Bruce’s own bass guitar strings.

Laser etched on to the artwork is a quote from Bruce which reads: “Failure can be a triumph but fear of failure is always a disaster.”

The piece was created by Royal Conservatoire alumna Hazel Blue, who was commissioned by Royal Conservatoire archives officer Stuart Harris-Logan. Bruce’s widow Margrit Seyffer and daughter Kyla attended the unveiling ceremony. Seyffer (left) is pictured with Blue.

The Conservatoire’s principal, Professor Jeffrey Sharkey, said: “Bruce was a prodigious talent, a natural musician whose art and legacy will inspire students for decades to come.”
