SCOTLAND’S richest MSP had come under fire for asking taxpayers to stump up for road signs highlighting tourist attractions near his estate.

Tory Alexander Burnett, who holds the Aberdeenshire West seat and is said to be worth £40 million, wanted the signs put up on the new Aberdeen bypass to direct people to the A93 tourist route. It passes Burnett’s family estate in Banchory.

Burnett was the subject of a complaint last year for failing to declare business interests when lodging parliamentary questions.

SNP MSP Stewart Stevenson said: “The fact that he’s done this at all is appalling, but after being censured it is simply staggering.

“It’s time for Ruth Davidson to rein in the self-interested gentry on her benches and tell them to represent constituents, not their landed estates.”

Burnett declined to comment.
