SCOTLAND’S biggest city should get a little smaller, an official body has said.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland recommends that Glasgow give up 150 houses to neighbouring North Lanarkshire.

The homes are part of a wider housing estate at Cardowan by Stepps, with all the others already within North Lanarkshire bounds.

A review was triggered in November 2016 after residents raised concerns about the distance their children had to travel to attend schools within the Glasgow City Council area, the lack of direct access to the rest of the local authority region and a “feeling of being isolated” from other city communities.

The recommendation will now go before Scottish ministers.

In a statement, the body said: “The commission believes there is a clear advantage for the effective planning and delivery of local services in putting the complete estate in a single local authority area and current road access, along with the commission’s desire to protect/encourage local ties, argues in favour of the area being placed in the North Lanarkshire council area.”
