The Truth About Obesity

NEARLY one in four people in the UK qualifies as being obese, meaning their weight is significantly affecting the state of their health. Presenter Chris Bavin seeks out the latest research into obesity and the problems that are being passed down to future generations. He finds out what it means to be obese, what it does to the body and looks at the most up-to-date solutions available. He also reveals how viewers can test themselves with a simple piece of string to find out if they have the most damaging type of fat.

The Stuarts: A Bloody Reign

THE Stuart dynasty lived through arguably the most eventful, bloodthirsty and trying period in British history, and this new series, hosted by Professor Kate Williams, reassesses the royal house and its legacy. It begins by focusing on the intellectual King James VI. He was unable to deal with a hostile Parliament, while his mismanagement of the kingdom’s funds and extreme Protestant background earned him many enemies. Indeed, it was James who was the target of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament in 1605, and when he died 20 years later, he had unwittingly sown the seeds for the English Civil War.

Harold Shipman: Doctor Death

ACCORDING to former Greater Manchester Police detective Sally Reid, when she first began investigating Harold Shipman, she was met with aggression from the families of some of his former patients, who believed the doctor had done a “fabulous job” with their parents. To mark the 20th anniversary of his arrest, this documentary looks at how the well-respected family doctor essentially groomed a community and abused that position of trust to become a serial killer.

Speaking for the first time, former detectives explain how the investigation escalated, and the toll it took on the victims’ families and the wider community.
