Let's be clear – there is a real problem with Scotland's renowned and distinct brand being damaged by attempts to overwrite it with UK flags and naming.
But let's also be clear – our story about "British Square Sausages" was written with tongue firmly in cheek. Here's a link to it, in case you missed the story.
There were some hilarious responses that understood these facts ... and then there were some lorne-again Unionist squares determined to prove, once again, that they're the wurst.
Here's a slice of the best reaction to the story on Twitter.

Hello, I’d like to report a square sausage with a Union Jack on it. pic.twitter.com/cmSMoAD0b9

What is the nationalists obsession with food. Do they get that rattled over the sight of the Union flag, that they make it front page news on their paper if they see one on a food packet ? This just proves that they have lost.

It’s the bigoted anti-British sausage type stories that show your true colours.

Why are square and sausage capitalised in the headline? Oh, I know why... illiteracy.

Personally I wouldn't choose the shape or origin of sausage-meat as the hill I'd want to die on, but I see many of you do... #Perplexed

What on earth is square sausage?

They ‘invented’ square sausage but they retweeted this two years ago.

“Dun dun DUN!” as my 7yo would say.
Come on cybernats, not only are those English stealing your sausages they’re pretending they didn’t realise they were doing it.

Good ‘ol Daniel inventing square sausage! A sausage that doesn’t roll off your roll?! 🤯 Hopefully one day us Scots will too get to enjoy such an ingenious product. 👍🏻

A square sausage without a skin, any square sausage whatever its purported nationality, is an abomination unto the Lord: Proverbs 13:2 https://t.co/tfAoDMycDv

'Square sausage' is Glaswegian cultural appropriation of the proper term 'sliced sausage' but you weegie-centrics never moan about that.

I worked in London for a couple of years in the early 90's. Had to take blocks of lorne with me for Scots colleagues. Square sausage is as alien to the english as savaloy is to the Scottish!

Is it just my imagination or are they smaller than they used to be? I'm pretty sure as a boy one square sausage filled a square loaf sandwich, nowadays you really need 2.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
