WHEN Ruth Davidson goes on maternity leave later this year, Jackson Carlaw will take over as leader of the Scottish Tory branch office – and he's already showing why he's the perfect candidate.
We know the Tories are experts in embarrassing and shameful social media posts, and Davidson is now being urged to order Carlaw to withdraw a "crass and offensive Tweet" politicising the Second World War.
He tweeted: "73 years ago today Nazi Germany surrendered, bringing an end to the European conflict in WW2. Not one time did people ask whether those defending our small island nation were from Gloucester or Glasgow. It didn't matter. We were one people standing alone."

His post marked the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s surrender, but ignored the contribution of a few others...
Social media users were on hand to correct the Scottish Tory deputy leader.

Many fought for Britain then went on to demand independence.

We didn't ask if they were from the Caribbean either, but that didn't stop you from deporting their children. #Windrush

On Saturday 90000 people took to the streets of Glasgow in support of independence for Scotland. Nobody asked if they were from Gloucester or Glasgow. It didn't matter. We were all under one banner. #AUOB

I’m appalled at people who use a world war to try &claim that my Irish uncle (radio officer volunteer), my Polish uncle (escaped POW), my French uncle, my Scottish relatives ALL had 2forgo sovereignty 2 England because they fought a HITLER!!! Stop your emotional manipulative evil

And now so many of your supporters use the Nazi salute. Who's side are they on?

I live in a village with a street called "Poles Road" after the Polish soldiers stationed here during WW2. Don't give me this "one people standing alone" crap.

And you are a liar- we weren't standing alone at https://t.co/r3pYDtOjeI neglect to say that we had numerous allies in WW2 including France, US, Australia, Russia, New Zealand to name but a few. You cannot rewrite history to suit your own political stance- try being truthful!

Pop yourself down to Capel Le Ferne and read the names on the Battle of Britain memorial, then resign, delete your account and do the nation a favour. Your warped, gammon like view of history is shameful

Alone? It's estimated that around 400,000 Americans and 10 million Soviets died during WW2 attempting to defeat the Nazis, alongside millions of other Allies. It didn't matter if you were from Glasgow or Gdansk. An explainer about the human cost of WW2. https://t.co/lUP7CXueMA

But with Brexit looming one would be justified in pointing out that whilst Scotland is intent on remaining close to our German & other European friends the Tory party is determined to separate the UK from those we once stood shoulder to shoulder with.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
