THE LibDems had hyped up Willie Rennie's contribution to First Minister's Questions today, and it didn't disappoint – for the SNP, at least.

"Coming up, @willie_rennie will be holding the First Minister to account at #FMQs," the Scottish LibDems had tweeted.

And so he came firing in, asking Nicola Sturgeon to back a second referendum on EU membership. 

The First Minister pointed out that Scotland's vote had already been ignored once – and that it was Labour they should be trying to convince.

The Scottish LibDem leader continued, pointing out former SNP advisers Noel Dolan and Kevin Pringle both backed it – "two of the great thinkers in the SNP", he said, prompting laughter from MSPs.

He then mentioned that Keith Brown and Ian Blackford were "also" sympathetic to the move, which was met with even more cheers.

"I was enjoying that so much," Sturgeon responded, when he'd finished his question.

But the First Minister had an even more important point to make in response – because all those great thinkers had another thing in common...
