THE National’s quality range of columnists and other contributors are playing a vital part in the Yes DIY movement – as events over the next couple of days show.
Tomorrow night, Bearsden South SNP will host a meeting that features Lesley Riddoch. As readers of The National will know from her column, Lesley has great admiration for the way they do things in Scandinavia and the other Nordic countries such as the Faroe Islands.

On this occasion, Lesley will be talking about Small Nordic States and Their Relationship With the EU at 7.30pm in the Bearsden Community Hub on Drymen Road.
Also tomorrow night, Strathearn SNP will host the Wee Ginger Dug and his human, Paul Kavanagh, in what is billed as an event for all supporters of Scottish independence in Strathearn.
Catch Paul and the Dug in the Strathearn Art Space in Crieff at 7.30pm. Entry is free and you are asked to BYOB – now whatever could that mean?
We can’t claim Gerda Stevenson as our own, because she’s a star who belongs to the whole of Scotland.
Tonight Gerda will be talking about her latest book of poetry, Quines: Poems in Tribute to the Women of Scotland, in a special event hosted by Leith SNP at Leith Dockers Club, Academy Street, at 8pm. Not to be missed.
Also tonight, Yes Cumbernauld have Craig Dalzell of Common Weal talking about social security post-independence. It’s at the Link centre at 7.30pm.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
