SCOTTISH couples have been urged to “shag for Scotland” in a bid to stave off a looming demographic timebomb.

Aberdeen North MP Kirsty Blackman made the tongue-in-cheek suggestion while speaking at a fringe event on the country’s economy at the SNP conference.

The MP suggested there were two ways to do something about a declining population: “You can increase your population in two ways, you can increase your population by people having more children, or you can increase your population by immigration.”

To laughter from delegates, she added: “Now, Denmark decided it would do a thing called ‘Do It For Denmark’. You know what, I had suggested that we could come up with something in relation to Scotland – I think there’s a good kind of alliteration that you could come up with there. That might win us some votes.

“But in the absence of that, in the absence of people being willing to have more children, what we need to do is to ensure that we get more immigration.”

The advertising campaign by travel agency, Spies, called on couples to “do it for Denmark” and “do it for mom” – suggesting couples go on holiday to conceive.

Reports indicate that there were 1200 more babies born compared to the previous year thanks to the campaign.
