ROCK n roll councillor Jim Todd was the undoubted hit of yesterday’s SNP conference.

The East Ayrshire provost, making the case for Scotland’s 32 local authorities to invest pension funds into the proposed new Scottish National Investment Bank, won huge acclaim when he ended his speech calling for “peace, love and independence”.

There were big cheers too for the prospect of Channel 4’s new headquarters being based in Glasgow.

Party members backed a resolution congratulating the city on being shortlisted for the venture after hearing speeches from MP Alison Thewliss, city council leader Susan Aitken and student Scott Blair.

It also called on all SNP representatives “to give any and all support they can” towards the bid that would be a major economic boost to Glasgow if successful.

The broadcaster will move 300 staff out of London to three new bases next year in the biggest change to its structure in its 35-year history, and invited pitches from across the UK.

As well as Glasgow, Bristol, Cardiff, Greater Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and the West Midlands have all been shortlisted for the national headquarters or a creative hub, while Belfast, Brighton, Newcastle-Gateshead, Nottingham, Sheffield and Stoke-on-Trent have made the cut to be considered to be a creative hub.
