FOREIGN Secretary Boris Johnson has thrown his substantial weight behind plans for a "Brexit bridge" between Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Yesterday, the Tory toff took to Twitter, sharing an article calling for a new 14-mile road link from Portpatrick to Larne or Bangor.

A source close to Johnson told the Telegraph: "Boris thinks this is an interesting idea which should be looked at more seriously - as politicians in both Scotland and Northern Ireland have already said.”

The National: Mayor of London Boris Johnson

Earlier this year, The National revealed the proposal by leading architect Alan Dunlop for a “Celtic bridge,” over the north channel.

Dunlop said the bridge would be similar to the one connecting Denmark and Sweden across the Oresund Strait and could be completed for a cost of between £15bn to £20bn.

The DUP’s Brexit spokesperson Sammy Wilson has said the crossing would "have a major positive impact on both countries economically".

Paul Reid, the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council even recently sent a letter to Nicola Sturgeon urging her to visit Larne to discuss the bridge.

He told the First Minister: “The idea of connecting Larne with Scotland is not a new one. There are plans for tunnels dating back to the 1890s and it is often mooted among the communities I represent in recognition of our rich shared history. Even the mythical giant Finn McCool recognised the benefits of building a causeway so as to not get his feet wet on the way to Scotland. Elected members and I would welcome further engagement with the Scottish Government and yourself in relation to the exciting opportunities the potential ‘Celtic Bridge’ would bring.”

Johnson whose plans for a controversial 'Garden Bridge' in London were shelved by his London mayoral successor Sadiq Khan, was criticised for backing the proposal.

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran of the Best for Britain campaign said: "This is more pathetic pipe dreams from a man who has delusions of grandeur.

"First it was Boris Island, then the BoJo One jet, then a bridge between the UK and France and now a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland. This Brexit bridge plan is barmy.

"It is another hair-brained idea from a cabinet member that could have been a Loony Tunes character. He can bumble and bluster as much as he wants but the man is a buffoon.

"The rest of the world seems to have realised that Boris Johnson is a joke – isn't it about time we did too?"
