The National:

IN a story about Tory councillors and Nazis, you'll be surprised to hear it's Ruth Davidson's lot who are doing the accusing.

Former Tory councillor Mark Vallance vented his rage at SNP head of communications Catriona Matheson after she pointed out a very simple fact.

Matheson was reminding people that the Tories have an absolutely dire electoral record in Scotland.

She tweeted: "Reality check from @IanBlackfordMP - the Conservatives have lost every single election in Scotland since 1955, yet they are dismantling the devolution settlement which Scots overwhelmingly voted for. #PowerGrab #EuWithdrawalBill"

The pro-Brexit, pro-Union Vallance was outraged, and decided this amounted to Nazi-level propaganda.

He replied: "Head of SNP communications bit like the #nats party Goebells, propaganda specialist? Figures.

"No amount of flannel from Ian Blackford, Peter Murrell or High Priestess Nicola Sturgeon trying to blame the #Tories for their failings. Voters are now seeing you as fake pretenders."

Obviously not the voters who have just brought about a huge surge in SNP membership.

Matheson hit back: "Not even had my breakfast yet & I've been likened to a Nazi by a former Tory councillor because he didn't like my tweet about Scottish electoral history."

It's interesting to see that Tory councillors don't lose their knack for beyond-ridiculous statements even after leaving their post.

All it takes to rile the Tories up is a simple reminder of how low the bar is set for their party in Scotland.
